In sum, scientists must be limited by a moral compass in order to avoid the dangerous outcomes of unethical science. This moral compass could help them navigate through difficult situations such as He Jiankui’s impulsive CRISPR experiment. If the Dali Lama’s implications are correct than it can be assumed that advanced technology such as CRISPR has the ability to change the world on a global scale. Whether this change is positive or negative depends on the actions that are taken in the next few years. I believe that scientists are beginning to falsely entice people with their expensive new scientific technology. This should concern the upcoming generation of parents who will have to decide whether they want to put their lives in the hands of technology and imperfect scientists. I do not want my kids to be treated as test animals in a lab, which is one of the many possible consequences of gene editing. Therefore I agree with the idea that it should be required for science to be properly limited and restricted.
Intro
Some people may believe that unethical actions can be made in the name of science. This is mainly because it is difficult to understand what is and isn’t ethical without a moral compass. The fourteenth Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso wrote a book on this topic called, “The Universe in a Single Atom”. His book gives insight into the world of genome editing and why the scientists in charge of it must have a reliable moral compass. Scientific technology such as genome editing has the power to change the world for the better. With that being said, there are many possible outcomes that can come from it including social and ethical catastrophes. It would be extremely dangerous to overlook these outcomes even though the scientific results appear to be more significant. Laws have been put in place to prevent these catastrophes but, laws tend to not have a lot of meaning to ambitious scientists. The consequences of unlimited science and technology outweigh the benefits therefore science should be limited by a moral compass.
